James Brown's Funky Christmas

Holiday compilation featuring funky yuletide tunes by the Godfather Of Soul. At his superstar peak in the 1960s and early '70s, Brown tried to appeal to several constituencies on his many LPs, and the Christmas market was not neglected. Indeed, for a while, he was on a regular schedule: this 17 track compilation includes selections from seasonal albums cut by J.B. in 1966, 1968, and 1970. Includes 'Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto', 'Christmas In Heaven' and 'Please Come Home For Christmas'.

Bootsy Collins - Christmas is 4 Ever

Here comes Bootsy Collins! Here comes Bootsy Collins! Right down Bootsy Collins Lane! Yes, it's gonna be a funktastic Christmas with Bootsy this year with this 2006 yuletide offering featuring four Bootsy originals and nine Christmas classics. Features guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Charlie Daniels (yes, Charlie Daniels!), Sugarfoot (from Ohio Players), Buckethead, Roger Troutman and former Parliament and Funkadelic members!

‘Twas the Night before Thanksgiving
written by sixtwenty294

'Twas the night before thanksgiving, when all through the crowd

Everyone was stirring, yelling out loud;

The lights were hung from the rafters with care,

In hopes that Phish soon would be there;

I sat next to jaded vets, all smug with their cred,

While drunkin' halucinations danced in my head;

With my brand new phish shirt, and my flat brimmed cap,

Had just thrown up on another phan's lap,

When out on the crowd there arose such a cheer,

I sprang from my seat and spilled my beer.

Away to the Isle I flew in a hurry,

Had to stop for moment when things got blurry.

The lights went out and they started the show,

They opened with song I didn't even know.

Then I thought, "What would make this crazier?"

"Oh that's right I brought a green laser!"

I turned it on and with great pride,

Shined it right on the stage, from Page side.

These dudes in eagles shirts turned around,

And they yelled, and they shouted, and everyone frowned;

"Hey, Fucker! Hey, shithead! Hey, you green lazer prick!

We're going to shove that thing up your ass real quick!"

I ran up the stairs and jumped over a rail!

I tried to get away but eventually failed.

The took my lazer and pulled down my pants,

I tried to stop them but didn't stand a chance.

And then, in a instant, I could feel them shove,

Like mom taking my temperature, but without the love.

The crowd in the section cheered with glee,

As they pointed, scoffed, and laughed at me.

The dudes who did this, were happy with their work,

They high fived each other; and said "Enough with this jerk",

So after treating my ass hole like a grommet,

They walked away as Phish played Halley's comet.

But I heard one of them exclaim, yelling to all the gazers,

"Have a great show everyone, but to hell with those lasers!"

Disc 3:
Encores:
1.E: Punch You in the Eye-8:16
2.Bittersweet Motel-4:18

notes on matrix:
There is some on and off FM noise up through david bowie. There are also some dropouts in Birds and at the very beginning of TMOE. The longest of which is about 2 minutes. I call that the McNally Gap for reasons known to him. Times for the obvious SBD d/o's are
1:50-1:51
2:36-2:38
2:46-4:27
There is no crowd noise between Sample and PYITE. There is crowd noise and house music at the end of Bittersweet. The crowd music is the BeeGees Night Fever.

This matrix, to me, is much better than the Houston gig. For starters, I went back the original ALD DAT which gave me much more accurate time alignment, not to mention was a much better remaster than what was circulated just as the ALD board before this. The Schoeps AUD source also complimented any lack in the ALD nicely. I plan to remaster Houston w/ the Schoeps AUD when it becomes available.

notes:
OK, the ALD master went through a LOT of processing before I mixed it w/ the AKGs. The end result is much better than I started out with, but isn't great. There is still some FM fuzz, and making a base mix in a pair of Grado cans was torture. It sounds better in nearfields, and is much less distracting on a home stereo.

Dallas came out better as far as ALDs go, but still isn't as good as possible. I also didn't have all of the capabilities when I mastered this (2002) as I do now. I'd love to remix this again now, but I no longer have any of the files I was working with 5 years ago. Quite honestly I don't like the timing of the first half of the mix, and I could do a more accurate job now, not to mention make a much better sbd re-master. I have the master dat, and much better gear, I just need a good aud source, so if anybody wants to help me out ...

I replaced the most horrendous parts of static in Moma and Jim with the straight up AUD. The most noticeable of which is in Moma 1:52-3:25. I don't have notes for all of the patch times. Many of them were extremely short and innocuous, but there were quite few of them. Most all of the patches were in Moma and Jim, so after Jim, everything is patch free. The mix relied heavily on the AUD; just increasing the timbre and presence w/ the board, so it is roughly 60sbd/40aud. Like I said, lots of processing.

In any event, this has been gathering dust for a while, and FiOS finally tore up my front yard, so I thought I'd dump some of this stuff into the pool. I'll make a better version when I can get ahold of another aud copy. Dallas is being redone as well with the Schoeps aud (including Birds of a Feather). So, more to come ..

Beck Record Club Stuff

"Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren't familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions."

Velvet Underground + Nico

Image

For this first edition, after lengthy deliberation and coming close to covering Digital Underground's Sex Packets, all present voted in favor of the 'other' Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico. Participants included this time around are Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and from Iceland, special guest Thorunn Magnusdottir, and myself. Thanks to everyone who helped put this together, and to all of you for indulging in this experiment. More soon.

Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen

Image

This time around the group includes Devendra Banhart, Ben, Andrew and Will from MGMT, Andrew from Wolfmother, Binki from Little Joy, and Brian and Bram returning from the first Record Club. For those new to the Record Club, it is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. An album is chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework. Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes documenting what happened over the course of a day. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren't familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions. 'Songs Of Leonard Cohen' by Leonard Cohen was chosen by Andrew from MGMT. For those interested, our close second choice was Ace Of Base, which we'll keep on the list for next time.

Crazee Christmas Karoke & A Ding Dong Dandy Christmas

Do yourself a favor and snag both of these, they were originally on one cd that an old record label friend of mine put together about 10 years ago . The christmas story below are his words that he wrote on the x-mas cd that he gave me.

The Karaoke tape is GOLD , one of the funniest things I've ever heard. The second link , the Ding, Dong ,Dandy Chrstmas album is pure 50's loungy Christmas Fun!

A Christmas Story....

I found this tape for sale in a goodwill bin. It was a budget blank cassette with "SP Xmas Party" written on it. Thinking it might be fun , I purchased it and took it home. Well "fun" turned out to be an understatement, for on the tape was a (company?) Christmas karaoke party in full swing!!! The participants all appear to be enjoying themselves immensely- i wish I could have been there. But now, thanks to modern technology , we can be there vicariously. So, if you're ready to party, then grab your leg warmers, your "Members Only" jacket and one white glove and travel back tot 80's with JT, Richard, Peter and the gang at the Sterling Villa rec room. They even left you full instrumental versions of "Don't You Want Me" & "Beat It" so that you can join in the sing-along fun!

(tracks 1-3)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/2gx7uk

But That's Not All,

For your additional listening pleasure , also included is one of the most zany/ fantastic christmas albums ever made. The Three Suns " A Ding Dong Dandy Christmas" It was dubbed from a sorta scratchy LP because it's never been issued on cd.

(tracks 4-17)

Just uploaded these G/D Soundboards from '74.... My favorite year.

Enjoy

By 1974 the Grateful Dead had become a true music machine. This had both a positive (sound) and negative (financial strains) impact. The band implemented the Wall of Sound (a monstrous amplification rig) on 03-23-1974 and by Fall 74 the band had "hit the wall". Through the year the Dead performed beautifully. Both soundboards and audience recordings sound rich and clear. Garcia picked his stratocaster in 1974 and Bill Kreutzman was handling all the drumming duties. Keith Godcheaux was in fine form all year and played fender rhoades on many cuts.
1974 was also the year the band "retired". The last run (October 16-20) at Winterland, is captured in the film, "Grateful Dead: The Movie".

1974 is one of the best years in the career of the Grateful Dead, like 1977, a top 10 list does not do the year justice. Hard to pick a "favorite".

I just caught these guys for the first time on Friday night, 12/5

the show we got was pretty close to this one, which means it was awesome...

...except for the part where my GF faceplanted right in front of the band after drinking too much wine...

anyway, check this out. Killer loud/hard/fast Rock n Roll from Texas...apparently they broke up for a while and are now touring again. I hope they do so for a while. They are on the same label as DBT, if that matters to anyone.

My second seeing this energetic band live, and will not be my last. A very energetic performance in front of a relatively small crowd. The holiday weekend probably had a lot to do with that. No real issues to speak of, a bit of crowd chatter here and there, but no distraction at all. No fades applied so split where you want or not at all.

Band Members:
BRENT BEST - Singer/Guitarist/Word-Writer
JESS BARR - Lead Guitarist
BRIAN LANE - Bassist Extraordinaire
TONY "The Surly One" HARPER - Drummer

i used "wave merge" to merge all the tracks together, then i cut the long pauses between the songs using eac.

it flows really nice now.

this is a great show, enjoy.

I rocked with a zombie: Roky Erickson @ The Great American Music Hall, Oct 31

4 Nov 2007, 23:39
Wed 31 Oct – Roky Erickson, 1990s

Last year, Roky Erickson played for the first time in decades in San Francisco, but the show (part of the Noise Pop festival) sold out before I could get tickets. Instead, I saw You're Gonna Miss Me, a documentary on his life. The movie was very good, and cleared up some misconceptions I had thanks to the liner notes for Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson), but still, I was kicking myself for missing what could have been a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see one of my favorite rockers play, given his age and, shall we say, notably erratic nature.

So naturally, when I was checking out the new Last.FM recommended events calendar and saw that Roky Erickson and The Explosives were playing in San Francisco—on Halloween, no less—I leaped at the chance. I went with my friend Joe, who I'd introduced to Roky's music years ago and who has become a big fan since.

The show did not disappoint. Roky was in fine form and played with gusto, and his backing band, The Explosives, were very tight. They played a good long set, featuring several songs from his best known album, Roky Erickson & the Aliens' The Evil One, including PlayWhite Faces, PlayMine Mine Mind, I Think Up Demons, PlayBloody Hammer (my favorite!), PlayNight Of The Vampire, PlayDon't Shake Me Lucifer, Red Temple Prayer (Two Headed Dog), and PlayCreature With The Atom Brain. He also played a few songs from other albums, including the '50s-'60s-styled love song Starry Eyes, the horror-blues number The Beast, and, as part of the first encore, The Interpreter. He finished up with a second encore, playing, of course, PlayI Walked With A Zombie, the perfect close to a great performance.

Roky didn't really work the crowd per se, but had a very charismatic stage presence regardless, and seemed genuinely happy to be there playing. After every number, he'd wave and give a hearty shout of "Thank you!" for the applause. The lead guitarist rocked out hard, but still kept Roky in focus, which is how it should be.

Of course, since it was Halloween, several people came in costume. Beyond a few zombies (naturally), I also saw a girl dressed as Charlie Chaplin, and quite a few foodstuffs (including beer. College crowd, what can I say?). Even the bassist was dressed as Death from The Seventh Seal. I think the drummer may have been in costume too, but from where I was I couldn't see him clearly (Roky and his lead guitarist were in street clothes).

Only one thing bugged me: the crowd. What is it with hipster crowds and not dancing? Must Maintain Ironic Detachment At All Times, I suppose. Heaven forfend anyone have a visceral reaction to the music! Of course, I can't blame some of the folks in bulky costumes. Still, while it made me a little self-conscious as I rocked out, it wasn't that big of a distraction. Especially since Joe was busy dancing like he'd stuck his finger in an electrical socket, I couldn't feel too out of place.

Just as a final note, despite the billing, 1990s did not play. I don't know if they were only booked for the previous night, or dropped out, or no-showed, or what, but the show was all Roky. Not that I really minded.

James Brown at the Apollo theatre in the late 70's. This is not the famous apollo theatre shows that they sell in stores. Those are from the 60's. I can't find track info now, but I'll find it later, and when i do I'll post it. The tracks should be marked once unzipped, anyway. It is SBD quality.

This is a compilation record of Funk and Soul(not my compilation). The title of the record is 'Rare-Classic Cuts-Northern Soul'. I included this specifically b/c of Gloria Jones' original track 'Tainted Love'. Which is a really great song. Enjoy.

some obscure funk tracks from deep within the crates

"Compiled by Josh Davis (aka DJ Shadow) and Keb Darge, Funk Spectrum is yet one more addition to the stable of essential BBE label collections, a virtual primer in old-school funk that assembles 20 tracks likely familiar to only the most diligent of rare groove collectors. According to Davis' liner notes, the omission of artist credits from the sleeve is in homage to the code of B-boy secrecy, although it makes the disc damn hard to critique; that said, the opening "Party Time" conjures the spirit of James Brown to uncanny perfection, "Let's Do It Today" could be a lost Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Band track, and "Clap Your Hands" imagines an alternate reality where the Jackson 5 comprised sisters, not brothers. Darge's ten selections are excellent as well, most of them slavish in their devotion to the genius of James Brown -- some are actual covers (Lou Pride's up-tempo reading of the perennial "It's a Man's Man's Man's World") and some are just mirror images (Ricky Caloway's "Tell Me," with its "Good God!" interjections), but all boast the funk in spades"

"Although Funk Spectrum II doesn't dig quite so deep into the crates as its predecessor -- no doubt because it's missing co-compiler Josh "DJ Shadow" Davis and his trainspotting oneupsmanship -- this second volume in the series maintains and even improves on the excellence of the first disc, forgoing obscure novelties for a more cohesive and better-sequenced listening experience. Series supervisor Keb Darge teams here with Kenny Dope to compile 20 relative obscurities drawn mostly from the early- to mid-'70s, although the disco era rears its head every now and again; this is textbook stuff, certainly never transcending the brilliance of masters like James Brown, George Clinton, or the Meters, but at the same time capturing the essence of pure funk with swaggering ease. Personal favorites: Mickey & Them's electro jazz-funk instrumental "U.F.O.," the Soul Seven's "The Cissy's Thing," and the Pleasure Seekers' Kool and the Gang homage "Give Up the Funk.""

"British DJ and beatminer extraordinaire Keb Darge has made a name for himself by finding long-forgotten funk and soul tracks and packaging them to a modern audience. Funk Spectrum, Vol. 3 is the continuation of his very successul series for BBE Records, and this time he gets a little help from legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock. As with any Keb Darge disc, there is little to criticize. Too often, compilations of obscure oldies appeal only to collectors, but Darge has an uncanny knack for finding old tracks that appeal to anyone. Highlights include long-forgotten tracks like the Chosen Few's twangy anthem "We Are the Chosen Few" and "Nothin But a Party (Part 1)" by the Blenders. Pete Rock contributes a few obscure tracks from well-known artists like the wonderfully moody "Chains & Things" by BB King and the surprisingly funky "Nothing Is the Same" by '70s rockers Grand Funk Railroad. Also included is the Motown-influenced "Hey Joyce" by Lou Courtney. None of the tracks on Funk Spectrum, Vol. 3 could be considered essential to anyone's collection. One could get a full sense of the funk genre without ever hearing music from groups with unintentionally hilarious names like Mad Dog & the Pups and Charles Pryor & Power of Love. But that's beside the point. The real joy comes from re-discovering something that might have been lost forever. As usual, Keb Darge has done all the footwork by unearthing these lost classics, leaving you with nothing to do but sit back and enjoy."
