I unfortunately have not had the privilege to have tried Hopslam yet. And Bell's WAS going to start distributing to Colorado but there's a certain tax CO has that would have ended up making an already very expensive brewery even more expensive for a 6-pack and was not worth it to sell in CO. Probably like $12-$13 a 6-pack....

I would still pay it for a 6 of Two-hearted once in awhile.

I drank HT and Pliny back to back on Christmas and while HT was very good it didn't stand up to Pliny.

This of course isn't to take away from HT which really, being completely honest, blew me away. I had never heard of it before Stanimal sent me some and the few people I let try it had nothing but great things to say about it.

I had the pleasure of having a Pliny and a HT back-to-back one night.

For my taste, Heady Topper is better. It's lighter and more thirst-quenching, whereas I found Pliny to be sweeter and maltier.

Hopslam isn't even in this conversation. And at $20/sixer, I probably won't even buy any this year. Maybe a single or two. But not a whole sixer.

Unofficial, since I haven't yet tried 'slam, but

Pliny > HT (and as others have said, HT is an OUTSTANDING beer...)

HT>Pliny>>>>hopslam

Having HT an hour after its canned may influence my opinion.
Pliny is way less of an in your face hop assault.

My vote doesn't count because I haven't had heady topper but Pliny is delicious and definitely beats out hopslam.

Not sure it belongs in this conversation, but Captain Lawrence brews an absolutely outstanding imperial IPA. Not widely distributed enough to get any pub, perhaps.

My group of friends did a back to back tasting of Pliny & Heady Topper (no small feat in Georgia) and 3 out of 4 of us gave an extremely slight advantage to the Heady Topper. It's too close to argue about though.

Pliny
Heady Topper

Vote might be skewed since I've had hopslam on tap and not the other two.

Pliny doesn't taste anything like Hopslam and vice versa.

I prefer the Hopslam style better. Pliny was good, just not as hoppy and citrusy/floral, etc

frankandbob wrote:

This. Being able to enjoy Hopslam is a badge of honor. If you can't handle Hopslam, then go with Pliny.

Haven't had Heady Topper, but I go like this:

Hopslam
Pliny
Double Trouble
Foothills Seeing Double (local beer)

For me, it's between Pliny and Heady Topper. Pliny is a straight-forward IIPA and pretty much perfect. Great piney hops, looks incredible, balanced very well. Then you have ugly ass Heady Topper. Shit floating around in it, cloudy and a dull color. But those hop flavors are just ridiculous. Probably the best tasting beer I've ever had. I went with Heady Topper.

Last superbowl I sampled Hopslam, Dogfish 90, Pliny, Founders Double Trouble at the same time and though DT was the best.

All are great including Topper. Amature pic drinking it out of a glass. Tough vote here.

I don't even drink beer. But I do like how a beer that was the BE ALL END ALL BEER OF PHISHHOOK for like 2 years... now... "doesn't even deserve to be in the discussion".

What changed?

Basically none. There's an very very very very slim to none outside chance you could luck out on Pliny the Elder, but for that to happen you'd have to be following every high end beer store on twitter and call them in time to reserve one bottle, which is all they alot per person.

The rest are not distibuted here.
